Romanesque basilica founded by Saint Ambrose in 379 AD — Milan's most important church historically, even if tourists flock to the Duomo. Byzantine mosaics, Carolingian golden altar, and the crypt with Saint Ambrose's remains. Lombard Romanesque architecture at its purest.

Insider Intel

Don't Miss

Enter through the colonnaded atrium — the approach is part of the design. The interior is dark and heavy in the Romanesque manner. The golden altar (9th century) behind the main altar is extraordinary. The Byzantine apse mosaics date to the rebuilding after 1080. The crypt contains the remains of Saint Ambrose, Gervasius, and Protasius. Allow 30-45 minutes.

Best Time

Morning for quiet. Avoid during mass unless you are attending. The piazza outside is pleasant for a pause — locals use it as a neighbourhood square rather than a tourist site.

Know Before You Go

Founded in 379-386 by Ambrose, Bishop of Milan and one of the four original Doctors of the Church. Rebuilt after collapse in 1196 in the Lombard Romanesque style that became the template for churches across northern Italy. The bell towers date from the 9th and 12th centuries. The golden altar (824-859) is one of the finest examples of Carolingian metalwork in existence. Saint Ambrose is Milan's patron saint — this basilica is the city's spiritual heart, not the Duomo. Free entry. Dress modestly.
