Half bookshop, half bar, entirely Santo Spirito. Volume occupies a ground-floor room on the piazza's eastern edge where shelves of Italian literature and art books share space with a bar that pours spritzes, negronis, and natural wine. The vintage armchairs by the window offer the finest piazza-watching position in the Oltrarno — Brunelleschi's austere Santo Spirito facade across the square, the evening crowd assembling on the church steps, the occasional drum circle or street performer. The books are for sale, the drinks are for lingering, and the two activities merge into something that feels essentially Florentine: the intellectual aperitivo.

Insider Intel

Order This

A spritz or a negroni — something that can be held in one hand while browsing with the other. The wine selection is small but thoughtful, leaning toward natural Italian producers. Claim a vintage armchair by the window, order a second drink, and let the piazza unfold. The books are curated toward art, architecture, and Italian literature rather than bestsellers.

Best Time

Late afternoon from 5pm when the piazza begins its nightly transformation from quiet square to outdoor living room. The golden hour light through the windows onto the bookshelves is a scene that feels arranged but is not. Santo Spirito peaks between 7pm and 10pm in summer — Volume is the best seat from which to watch it happen.

Know Before You Go

Piazza Santo Spirito is the heart of the Oltrarno — a residential square with a few restaurants, no monuments beyond the church, and a nightly gathering of locals, students, and visitors who have figured out where the real Florence lives. Volume is on the east side of the piazza. The interior is small, perhaps twenty seats between the armchairs and the bar. No reservations. Prices are honest — spritzes around six euros, wine by the glass from five. The piazza can get lively and loud on summer weekend nights. Card accepted.
