Rex Caffe

cocktail·$$·Sant'Ambrogio

A retro-fitted neighbourhood bar in Sant'Ambrogio where the decor references mid-century Italian design with enough sincerity to avoid costume, and the crowd is young, local, and entirely uninterested in whether you have seen the David. Rex operates on the principle that a neighbourhood bar should be good at several things simultaneously — cocktails are competent, the DJ sets on weekends bring energy without pretension, and the aperitivo hour draws the kind of mixed crowd that makes Italian bars function as social infrastructure. The Sant'Ambrogio market across the street sets the neighbourhood tone: working, real, and slightly rough around the edges.

Insider Intel

Order This

A negroni or a spritz during aperitivo; a gin and tonic when the DJ starts and the room shifts gears. The cocktail list is not trying to win awards but everything is made correctly and priced fairly. On weekend nights when the music runs, the drink becomes secondary to the energy — order something simple and stay on the dance floor.

Best Time

Two modes: aperitivo from 6pm to 8pm for the neighbourhood-bar experience, or Friday and Saturday from 10pm onward for the DJ sets when the room transforms from bar to low-key club. The two experiences share an address but little else. Choose based on whether you want conversation or movement.

Know Before You Go

Sant'Ambrogio is Florence's most local neighbourhood with a functioning daily market, cheap trattorias, and a near-total absence of souvenir shops. Via Fiesolana is a five-minute walk east of Santa Croce. The bar is not large and the weekend DJ nights fill it — arrive before 10pm or expect standing room. Cocktails six to ten euros. The retro aesthetic is consistent without being obsessive. The crowd skews Italian and under forty. No reservations. Card accepted.
