Insider Intel
Walk through the triumphal arch to the viewing platform on top (free access). The symmetry of the park and the view east over the lawns is impressive. The three museums are worth visiting if time permits — Autoworld has an excellent vintage car collection, Art & History has world-class antiquities. Perfect for a picnic or running.
Summer afternoons for sunbathing on the lawns. Sunday when locals come for picnics and informal football. Morning for running or cycling the paths. The arch is illuminated at night.
Built for the 50th anniversary of Belgian independence in 1880 (hence Cinquantenaire). The triumphal arch was completed in 1905 after multiple delays. King Leopold II wanted Brussels to rival Paris — this was part of that ambition. The park hosts major events including concerts and Brussels 20km race. The European Quarter (EU institutions) is immediately west. Metro Merode or Schuman.
