Noordzee / Mer du Nord

A fishmonger's counter with high tables on the pavement and no pretence whatsoever — just the freshest North Sea catch cooked while you watch and eaten standing up with a cold glass of Muscadet. Noordzee operates at the intersection of market stall and restaurant, the seafood arriving from the adjacent fishmonger and hitting the grill or fryer within the hour. Shrimp croquettes with a shattering crust, grilled calamari glossy with olive oil, oysters opened to order, grey shrimp piled into cones. The crowd is office workers at lunch and tourists by afternoon, all pressed together at metal tables in the middle of Sainte-Catherine, the old fish market square that still smells faintly of brine and commerce.

Editor's Pick$$
Order: Shrimp croquettes — the benchmark against which all others in Brussels are measured. Half a dozen oysters with lemon. The grilled fish of the day, whatever it is. A cone of grey shrimp to eat with your fingers. Glass of white wine or a cold Vedett. Prices are by weight for most items.Best: Lunchtime between noon and 1:30pm for peak market energy and the widest selection before popular items sell out. Friday is the best day — freshest deliveries, liveliest crowd. Arrive by 11:45 on weekends to avoid the worst queues.

Moules-frites institutions, gueuze bars, Brussels nightlife without tourist prices.

Madame Moustache

Named after a nineteenth-century Belgian gambler and brothel keeper, Madame Moustache channels the spirit of its namesake into a cabaret-style venue that refuses easy categorization. Velvet interiors and theatrical lighting set the stage for a programming calendar that veers from burlesque nights to electro-swing, from jazz quartets to DJ sets that keep the floor moving until dawn. The eclecticism is the point — you never quite know what you will walk into, which is precisely the kind of gamble the original Madame would have appreciated. The drinks are secondary to the spectacle, but competently made and fairly priced for a night out this entertaining.

Order: A Belgian beer — Duvel or Tripel Karmeliet — is the pragmatic choice in a venue where you will be moving and dancing. For cocktails, the house Aperol Spritz is reliable. On burlesque nights, champagne by the glass feels appropriate to the setting.Best: Saturday nights from eleven onward, when the programming is at its most ambitious and the room reaches its ideal density. Check the website calendar beforehand — themed nights vary wildly, and knowing what you are walking into enhances the experience.
